The Project

What’s being planned

Following planning permission approval in November 2017, Protium purchased Hartwood Windfarm site from ABO wind.

We commenced initial ground investigation works in winter 2023. This is the start of the development process, and we are expecting to commence construction in 2024.  Once complete, the windfarm will comprise seven wind turbines with a maximum tip height of 126.5m and produce  20.5MW. The development will remove over 38,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year and will support our green hydrogen business across the UK.

Protium is a GREEN hydrogen business and to support hydrogen projects we also invest and own a portfolio of renewable energy projects across the UK.  The energy generated is then sleeved through the grid to the hydrogen site.  Hartwood is one of those projects and we are delighted that it is our first investment in Scotland. Hartwood will be powering multiple hydrogen projects across the UK, one of which is in Samlesbury.

Meet the Project Team

Iain Cassidy

Senior Project Manager

I am the Senior Project Manager for the Hartwood Net Zero Project. I am a degree qualified civil engineer with over 18 years’ experience within the renewable energy sector. My role is to make sure the project is delivered safely and provides all its promised benefits including reduced CO₂ emissions and improved local air quality.  We aim to make our projects part of the fabric of the communities where they are located, and I am looking forward to working with the community of Hartwood and Shotts through the delivery of this exciting project.

Carolyn Ellis

Project Manager

I am the Project Manager on the Hartwood Net Zero Project, working with and providing support for the Senior Project Manager to ensure the Hartwood Net Zero Project is delivered safely and efficiently. I will be working closely with our local project partners, including our Owners Engineer GreenCat Renewables and North Lanarkshire Council, in order to deliver the highest standard of delivery. Protium prides itself on putting community and the planet as a whole first and this project will go a long way to help it achieve it’s goals. Our aim is for Hartwood Net Zero to be a long-term, safety driven, renewable energy project that stands to benefit the local community of North Lanarkshire and more widely the energy users of the UK.

Eliza Hamer

Stakeholder Associate

My key focus for the Hartwood Net Zero project is to work with our stakeholders and the local people of Hartwood, Schotts and the neighbouring communities to manage and mitigate any social and environmental impacts. Putting people and place at the heart of my work, I will listen and engage with the local community and political stakeholders to deliver socio-economic benefits alongside the successful construction and operation of a wind energy project. We will be delivering both community and environmental benefits, including tree planting and peatland management plan. Leading the local climate debate and the renewable energy agenda, we are a reliable partner in renewables and plan to deliver a scheme that meets shared and high ambitions. Please do contact for all local and general public engagement or queries.
